Shunmyo Masuno is a prominent Japanese landscape architect and a Buddhist priest. His gardens based on Zen philosophy are known for blending Japanese landscaping traditions and contemporary urban aesthetics. Masuno has 24 projects outside Japan (China, Germany, Canada, USA, and etc.). The architect strives to establish dialogue between various cultures and uses garden as an instrument for deep understanding of human nature. This article introduces the three foreign projects of Masuno: Japanese garden in Berlin, stone garden in Shanghai and landscape design of The Pavilia Hill condominium in Hong Kong.

In September 2021 Yugen Landscape Journal was interviewing Shinji Kugou, a famous Japanese landscape architect from Toyama Prefecture (Japan), Toyama International College of Crafs and Arts professor, a general manager of Kugou Ichijuen Co. Ltd., founded in 1875 by his great-grandfather. The Toyama-Vladivostok Friendship Garden was his first project of Japanese garden construction in Russia. The paper reviews the design of the Seifuso Villa’s garden, a masterpiece of modern Japanese landscape art. Seifuso Villa was a private residence of Kinmochi Saionji, Prime Minister of Japan (1906−1908; 1911−1912). The Seifuso garden is considered as a representative work of a pioneer of modern Japanese landscaping Ogawa Jihei VII (Ueji) but it has some unique features which seem to have been implemented by Kinmochi. We study the main characteristics of Ueji’s design and then analyze the aesthetic ideas of Kinmochi to add a new perspective of his involvement in the Seifuso garden creation.

The paper discusses the construction and operation of Japanese garden outside Japan by the case of Toyama--Vladivostok Friendship Garden (also known as Morimoto Garden) located in Vladivostok, Russia. This stone garden appeared in 2001 as a result of international cooperation between the regional governments of Toyama prefecture and Primorsky region. The paper highlights the main periods of construction and renovation, explains the key ideas and concepts of classical dry landscape garden (karesansui), defines the structural changes of the landscape composition and determines the negative factors that had impaired the appearance of the garden significantly.

The paper discusses the issue of forming the ecological vision of professional designers and students specializing in "Environmental Design" by using the ecopsychological expansion of consciousness. The inclusion of a Japanese garden into the educational environment of the VSUES created the conditions for immersion in the natural environment and for changing the designer’s consciousness through the process of realizing himself as a part of Nature. The creation of an educational environment of a developing (creative) type changes the system of cognitive, emotional and personal relations of the designer not only to the natural environment, but also to the artificial environment of the interior or landscape designed by this designer. Deep immersion in Japanese culture, rethinking its artistic traditions can bring the student’s project thinking to a new level, thereby showing the inexhaustibility and relevance of the traditional garden as a source for expansion of the professional ecological consciousness of the designer in an urbanized environment.

This paper illustrates how overriding principles and major influencing factors have been guiding development of Bokyo-no En garden in Khabarovsky region, Russia. The idea to create Japanese garden around the existing stone monument commemorating the World War II Japanese prisoners of war perished in Korfovski village, Khabarovsky region, was conceived by the Russian local authorities. This spiritual place needs a strong but appropriate design and due to the site size, financial, and environment conditions, symbolism with its adoptability and flexibility has been called for and preferred.

The International Scientific Conference "Japanese Gardens: Botany, Semantics, Landscape" was held on May 31 — June 03, 2021 in the Peter the Great Botanical Garden of the Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg, RUSSIA). The main purpose of the conference is to introduce features of maintenance and creating of traditional Japanese gardens, both in Japan and abroad, to illustrate the role of this phenomenon of Japanese culture in the intercultural relations development. There were many participants from Russia, Japan, USA, Belarus, Ukraine and Spain in the conference.

The Symposium "Japanese Gardens in the Global Era" was held on March 12, 2022 in Kyoto University (Kyoto, Japan) by The Organization for Landscape and Urban Green Infrastructure. The keynote speakers of this simpozium were Mr. Hiromasa Amasaki from Kyoto University of the Arts and Mr. Isoya Shinji from Fukui Prefectural University. The main subject of this simpozium was modern conditions of Japanese garden research and creating.
